Sir Edmund Hillary Explorer Tour - Tue 18 Apr 2023 - Aoraki Mt. Cook
It turned out to be a 'stay inside out of the rain day' with no flights possible for the one optional extra we had paid for - a birthday scenic flight for Barb along with Ray - "with expert pilots navigating their way over a glacial lake, passing soaring mountain tops over NZ's longest glacier - the 600 metre thick, Tasman Glacier."
With $2 coins to feed the washing machines and dryer I advanced on the laundry room and managed a load of washing done, puncuated with waiting for machines to become available, chats with fellow laundry waiting people from our tour. The laundry was in the older wing and the shortest way back to our room was to do a quick dash from that area's outside door across to the awning covering the bus alighting / loading reception area.
Later with laundry done, conversations waning and the rain seeming to ease a little Cody suggested we go for a walk, so raincoats on and out the door, initially heading up a slope above the Hotel. We weren't the only ones venturing up this rain cascading pathway. While trudging up hill we got a call from neighbour Carol responding to our request for Carol to shift the satelitte connecting water tank montioring device, (Auckland University research project that Cody got me into). Huddling under what shelter we could manage with fern fronds we quickly got that conversation out of the way and then I suggested to Cody maybe we shouldn't keep climbing as we (I) may tire and trying to not slip coming back down might be a bit hazardous. Initially we came down to just above the bus park and then back up a little to explore where the Hotel's water intake system was.
So we continued on down past the hotel and on the drive out to the main road, where a track was heading off to our left - on a more level tragetory Droplets of rain on the twigs and a hint of sunshine. Moss clinging to the branches giving a snowy glow 5:05pm maybe it is time to turn back so we don't miss the pre-dinner talk from Sarah Hillary, Ed Hillary's first daughter. 5:07pm
