SIR EDMUND HILLARY EXPLORER TOUR - MON 17 APR 2023 - Tekapo to Mt Cook
Should I walk up those steps where a lot a folk of the bus were heading, or should stay at car park level?
and choosing to stay at the lower level I could observe our tour group members coming back down and others heading the shoreline and the Church of the Good Shepherd Situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo is the Church of the Good Shepherd, which, in 1935, was the first church built in the Mackenzie Basin. The church at Lake Tekapo was designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by a local artist, Esther Hope. The church is one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames views of the lake and mountains. Information from Wikipedia
The girl in the white puffer jacket, appears twice - down by the water's edge in bare feet and then shoes on, stepping over different rocks - this time up alongside the Church of the Good Shepherd.
I couldn't seem to find a good composition of the Church with the lake background and Jeantine down by the water's edge wasn't well positioned for me to have as a foreground figure, so I followed to were Jeantine was then chatting to Melissa and both were taking photos from the bridge.
Then, looking back toward Lake Tekapo I saw an image that was more appealing to the eye with the calm water reflections.
Then back to the water"s edge to look toward Mt Cook There was some explanation of the cloud cover towward Mt. Cook, perhaps by our Tour Guide who was into gliding and so understood these things. What I see from a Facebook post of the above photo, had "Nor Westerly effect we are told". Looking for another photo before boarding the bus, I was wondering what this building was for, but never went inside to find out, being distracted by this reflected image.
Back on the buses we were advised of a delay through our planned route being blocked through rescue services dealing with a Van that had crashed off the road and ended on it's roof in a field alongside the road.
17 April 2023 In the Timaru District, State Highway 79 is closed south of Geraldine -- between the Earl Road and Brenton Road intersections. Several people are gathered around a campervan that has turned on its side -- some in white coats. Our guide Philip advised his team was talking to the Police to explore the possiblity of our buses getting dispensation to get through past the accident area somewhat quicker seeing as we had 4 coaches trying to maintain a schedule for the Hermitage Hotel and after short while we got the go ahead. However we were still held up in a line of vehicles waiting to get through, so I don't we got any dispensation. As we passed the accident site it we could see it was a Hire Van on its crunched roof some 200 metres off the side of the road. Son Cody was wondering if it might've been that brand of Camper Van we had seen parked at Tekapo.
Travelling onto Mt. Cook and our accomadation at the Hermitage Hotel, the skies were becoming a cloudy grey.
A view of Aoraki Mt. Cook from the Heritage Hotel and things were too cloudy for star gazing at the Planetarium. Waiting for dinner we had a little wander around and looking here at the newer part of the Hermitage. Discussions next day around the laundary room indicated we were lucky to be in the newer part of the Hotel - with better temperature control in the rooms.
